Sony Xperia Z
You don't have to compromise on specifications when opting for a water-resistant phone, as Sony's Xperia Z proves.
Featuring a 1.5Ghz quad-core processor, 13MP camera and full HD display, the Xperia Z is one of the most powerful handsets launched so far.
The phone looks pretty slick too, being a thin rectangular block with rubberised plug covers for the micro-SIM bay, microSD card slot, earphone jack and microUSB port.
We're still playing around with our handset, so look for the review next week!

Motorola Defy/Defy+
One of the more affordable water-resistant handsets around, the Motorola Defy is a durable beast of note.
Not only does it feature resistance to water, but it also boasts dust-resistance, making it ideal for adventuring types and athletes.
Despite its durability, the Defy was rather lacking when it came to specifications, even back then, with an 800Mhz processor in tow. However, the Defy+ ups the clock speed to 1GHz, so if you're looking for a nippier experience, that would be your best pick.
Design-wise, the Defy/Defy+ makes use of two rear covers to achieve a watertight seal - a very practical, albeit not aesthetically pleasing solution. Read our Motorola Defy+ review here.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Active
Released back in 2011, the Xperia Active stood out at the time thanks to its relatively powerful internals as well as its water-resistant design, we found.
Running Android 4.0, a 1Ghz processor and 512MBs of RAM, the Xperia Active is firmly in mid-range territory now. However, it's still a capable phone, with the latest games running at a decent clip.
Aside from the water-resistance and decent spec sheet, the Xperia Active also features wet finger tracking and a variety of fitness applications.

Samsung Galaxy Xcover/Xcover 2
Samsung has released a slew of Android handsets over the years, covering almost every form factor that can be had. And yes, it has a water-resistant phone or two as well.
The Galaxy Xcover is both water- and dust-resistant, so you don't need to be overly worried if you drop it in some mud during a camping trip or cross-country run.
Much like the Motorola Defy range, the Xcover isn't very powerful, with an 800Mhz processor and 3MP camera. However, the Xcover 2 ups the ante, with a 1Ghz dual-core processor and 5MP camera.

Sony Xperia Go
It seems like Sony is the only major company releasing water-resistant smartphones with any sort of regularity, with the Xperia Go being another handset.
Again, the phone is slightly underpowered compared to today's AAA smartphones, but a 1Ghz dual-core chip, 512MBs of RAM and 5MP camera means it's got all the makings of a solid performer.
Much like the Motorola Defy range, the Xperia Go is dust-resistant too, so if you left your phone on a gravel road or in the veld (why would you do that?), it should work just fine.
